Camera AirPods Slip to 2027 as AirPods 5 Ship

Apple kept camera AirPods off its September 9 stage and parked them for a late 2027 launch next to the 20th-anniversary iPhone.

The earbuds that did appear are AirPods 5, open-ear buds with Active Noise Cancellation from $129, in stores from September 18. The cameras belong to a different product: stem sensors for Visual Intelligence, tied to a phone that is a year away.

The Open-Ear Pair That Shipped Without Cameras

Apple’s “Surprise and Shine” event on September 9 put AirPods 5 on the same bill as new iPhone 18 Pro models, a foldable iPhone, and two Apple Watch updates. The company said the buds deliver the best Active Noise Cancellation in an open-ear design, cutting up to 50 percent more noise than AirPods 4 with ANC through a new multiport acoustic layout and updated computational audio.

Both SKUs now include ANC. AirPods 4 had made buyers pay extra for that feature; the ANC step-up then cost $179. AirPods 5 with the Wireless Charging Case is $149, which is $30 less, and the $129 pair includes ANC as standard. Pre-orders opened in the United States and more than 65 other countries on September 9.

Dave Pakula, Apple’s vice president of Hardware Engineering, framed the launch as a price and lineup move, not a new sensing category.

Live Translation now runs across the AirPods lineup when Apple Intelligence is on. Siri AI, rolling out as a beta with iOS 27 on Monday, September 14, in English first, can take head-gesture yes and no answers from the buds. None of those features need a camera in the stem.

THE TWO AIRPODS 5 MODELS

The Wireless Charging Case model adds one hour of ANC playback on a charge, a force sensor that takes volume swipes on the stem, and a case that sits on an Apple Watch charger or a Qi pad. Apple rates both for IP57 dust, sweat, and water resistance, and says the buds use 40 percent recycled material overall, including 100 percent recycled cobalt in the battery. Five minutes in the case is supposed to give about an hour of listening. The H2 chip stays in this generation.

Camera AirPods Wait on Visual Intelligence and a New iPhone

The product that did not show is a high-end in-ear pair with cameras meant to read the room for Siri. Mark Gurman, who covers Apple’s hardware plans, has said those buds feed Visual Intelligence so the assistant can answer questions about what sits in front of the wearer without anyone raising an iPhone.

That job already exists on the phone. Visual Intelligence lets iPhone users learn about what is in front of you by holding the camera on a restaurant, a plant, a poster, or a block of text, then asking Siri to identify it, translate it, or save it. Camera AirPods are the same pipeline with the phone left in a pocket. They need an Apple Intelligence iPhone, which means iPhone 15 Pro or later, and they need visual models that can name objects in a live scene.

Gurman wrote in June that those models, and the Siri work around them, were the reason the calendar moved.

The AirPods, code-named B798, were originally slated for release in 2026, according to the people. The deadline slipped in part because of Apple’s prolonged struggles with artificial intelligence software. The company also had to develop visual AI models capable of identifying objects in a user’s surroundings.

AirPods 5 still talk to Siri AI and still run Live Translation. The seeing layer is what stayed in the lab. Until that layer is trusted, a camera in the stem is a sensor with no finished product wrapped around it.

Why Did Apple Pull B790 in August?

Apple ran two camera projects at once. B798 was a new AirPods Pro generation with cameras, the one Gurman had on a 2026 target before the AI slip. B790 was a faster path: last fall’s AirPods Pro 3, already in stores at $249, fitted with sensors and the Visual Intelligence stack.

In early August, Gurman said B790 had been progressing well enough that it could still come this year. References then showed up in a macOS Tahoe 26.7 release candidate, and a demo clip from that build leaked in mid-August. Days later he said the 2026 map no longer held the camera pair, and that Apple had no plan to sell camera-equipped AirPods before 2027. Supply-chain snags sat next to the software gap in that account; by summer, when the company had wanted to start making the buds, both problems were still open.

THE CAMERA AIRPODS CALENDAR

1. 2026 original target: B798 is slated as a 2026 AirPods Pro with cameras.
2. June 2026: Gurman moves the camera pair to late 2027, citing Siri and visual AI models, alongside the 20th-anniversary iPhone.

B790 was the retrofit that could have made September. Pulling it left the open-ear ANC refresh as the only AirPods news in the room. B798 remains the 2027 vehicle in Gurman’s account, not a photo-and-video glasses clone hung on an ear.

1-Megapixel Stills Across Two Stems

Code in that 26.7 build, described after a forum member traced an accessory-sensor framework, is blunt about what the hardware is allowed to do. The buds look like AirPods Pro 3 with cameras set into the stems. They do not take a picture you keep, and they do not record video.

A leaked demo makes the pitch in Apple’s own voice. A man holds a book up to the stems. The voiceover says, “With Visual Intelligence, your world becomes savable. See something you like? Just ask me to save it for later.” If hair covers the buds, an alert tells the wearer, “To get the most accurate information about things in your environment, make sure AirPods are not covered.”

WHAT THE STEM SENSORS DO

• Two cameras: Each earbud carries its own sensor, and the pair takes synchronized color stills of the same scene from two angles.
• Still limit: The cameras capture RGB stills of up to 1 megapixel; there is no video recording option in the code.
• Active mode: When the wearer likely invokes Siri, the buds capture a 640 by 640 image and return a processed 1024 by 1024 frame.
• Passive mode: A 320 by 320 grab can run in the background when speech, audio shifts, posture, or head turns trip the system.
• On-device check: Some work, including person detection, is described as running on the buds before anything leaves the device.
• Indicator light: Hardware lighting is supposed to come on when stills are captured, including when visual data is sent to the cloud.

That is a sensing kit, not a creator camera. Apps that already plug into Visual Intelligence can surface places and objects around them when the system hands over a scene. Camera AirPods would extend that handshake to a head-worn pair. An H3 chip is in the rumor mill for this model; AirPods 5 still ship with H2, which fits a launch that never had to run those stills.

Meta’s Extra Year of Face Cameras

The year Apple just handed away is a year Meta already occupies. Ray-Ban Meta glasses sell a 12-megapixel camera that takes photos and 3K video the wearer can keep and post, with list prices starting from $299. People buy those frames for the camera first. Apple’s stem sensors, as described in the leaked code, cannot do that job on purpose.

TWO WEARABLE CAMERAS, TWO JOBS

Apple is also working on its own glasses, with a public target around 2027, and has not settled how aggressive that camera will be. The AirPods project is the earlier, quieter version of the same choice: keep a sensor that feeds the assistant, and refuse the shutter that turned face cameras into a street argument. Meta keeps the recording product in the meantime. Apple keeps a rumor that looks adjacent and does a narrower thing.

Confusion already jumped the wrong way. After the September 9 event, some posts treated AirPods 5 as if the cameras had shipped inside them. They did not. The $129 pair is an ANC and translation refresh. The lenses are the 2027 SKU, and mixing the two is how a delay turns into a trust problem before the hardware exists.

On the Stem, a Light Other People Must See

Earbuds are already a way to step out of a room without leaving it. A lens on the stem does the opposite, and that mismatch is sitting on the 2027 pitch even though the sensors are too weak to shoot a usable photo. A light on a stem the width of a pencil is also easy to miss in a hoodie, under hair, or in a dark bar, which is why the leak’s “make sure AirPods are not covered” line reads like an engineering bug and a social one at the same time.

Passive capture, if it ships as the code sketches it, would fire on speech and head motion, not only on a Siri request. Person detection on the bud is the privacy concession in that design; a cloud round trip with an LED is the other half. Apple has spent years telling buyers the company will not be Meta on this point, including after reports that contractors had reviewed intimate clips from glasses users. A 1-megapixel still pipeline with no photo roll is how it tries to keep that promise and still put a camera in an object millions of people wear on transit.

The objection waiting in 2027 is not battery life. It is whether anyone standing in front of the wearer believes the LED, the resolution cap, and the “we do not keep pictures” claim. Hoodies and long hair make the hardware’s own accuracy warning, and they make the bystander’s warning too.

Late 2027 Stays Tied to the Anniversary Phone

Gurman’s date is not “sometime next year.” It is late 2027, in the same window as a 20th-anniversary iPhone with a nearly edge-to-edge face and curved glass that wraps the sides. Camera AirPods need that generation as a host in his reporting, the way Visual Intelligence today needs a compatible iPhone in your hand. A 2026 retrofit of AirPods Pro 3 would have asked this year’s phones and this year’s Siri beta to carry a new sensor. Apple would not sign that off in August, and it did not reverse the call on September 9.

AirPods 5 will be in stores on September 18, with Siri AI in beta on September 14 for English on supported iPhones. The seeing earbuds still have no order page, no price, and no name beyond the Pro-shaped shells in a leaked clip. Until the visual models and the anniversary phone are ready to take stills from two stems, the open-ear pair at $129 is the one on the truck.
