Warcraft 3 Reforged Tethers Patch 3.0 and Drops LAN

Patch 3.0 makes Warcraft 3 Reforged always-online and kills LAN, leaving the new campaign and 24-unit cap stuck on Battle.net.

Warcraft 3: Reforged patch 3.0.0, live on September 12, 2026, needs an internet link for every mode, including singleplayer. LAN is gone from that client. The new Forsaken Kingdom campaign and the 24-unit selection cap stay on the same login.

Blizzard left offline play and LAN on a separate Classic Client. That install is the old 1.29 build, which does not carry the 3.0 upgrades.

Patch 3.0 Cut LAN and Offline Play

Version 3.0.0, build 24268, shipped with Forsaken Kingdom on September 12, 2026, the opening day of BlizzCon. the Forsaken Kingdom patch notes put the network cuts in the same block as nine new game servers, and they give no reason.

Lan mode has been removed (players can still play LAN via the Classic Client). Reforged client now requires players to be online at all times (offline mode still available via the Classic Client).

Blizzard Entertainment, Warcraft III: Reforged 3.0.0 patch notes

That Classic Client is not the Classic graphics toggle inside Reforged. It is the separate Legacy TFT 1.29 install on the Battle.net app, the build Blizzard restored earlier this year for rooms with no ranked ladder. Reforged itself had a Local Area Network path after launch in January 2020, once you logged out of Battle.net. Patch 3.0 takes that path out of the remaster.

WHAT WE KNOW

  • The rule: The Reforged 3.0.0 client must stay online, even in singleplayer, and it no longer hosts LAN games.
  • The leftover path: Offline play and LAN still run on the 1.29 Classic Client that comes with a Reforged purchase.
  • The silence: The notes do not say why the remaster lost those modes.

WHAT IS UNCONFIRMED

  • DLC lock: Whether the change exists to keep the paid campaign off unpaid copies.
  • Cheat control: Whether always-online is meant to police custom games and ranked play.
  • A revert: Whether Blizzard will put LAN or offline back on the 3.0 client.

Custom lobbies can now be password protected, which is a Battle.net feature, not a local one. The remaster is being steered toward hosted play.

Graphics Upgrades That Stop at the Login

Patch 3.0 is also the largest free drop Reforged has had in years, and every headline change lives in the client that now needs Battle.net. Players can pick Classic, Definitive Edition, or Reforged graphics. Classic HD is gone. Definitive Edition rebuilds more than 600 units and refreshes lighting, water, and fog while keeping the old silhouettes readable in a zoomed-out fight. Cross-graphics multiplayer still works, as long as everyone is online.

PATCH 3.0 ON THE REFORGED CLIENT

  • Selection cap: Max group size rises from 12 to 24, a change ranked players have wanted for years.
  • Graphics modes: Classic, Definitive Edition, and Reforged, with 1.36 terrain restored in Reforged Mode.
  • New tavern hero: The Forsaken Paladin is free in multiplayer in all three looks, the first new tavern hero since September 2004.
  • Map tools: A lighting editor, cinematic editor, alpha tiles, and new natives land in the World Editor.

None of that travels to a 1.29 LAN room. A night of melee on the legacy build still uses the old 12-unit cap and the old models. Map authors who want the new editor also stay on the live client. The better Warcraft 3 is the one that will not boot when the internet drops.

Reforged 3.0 Versus the 1.29 Client

Buying Reforged still includes both programs. After 3.0 they are no longer two skins on one game. They are two games that share a receipt and almost no new features.

WHAT EACH CLIENT CAN DO AFTER 3.0

Feature Reforged 3.0.0 Legacy 1.29
Internet to play Required in every mode Not required
LAN Removed Supported
Offline singleplayer Removed Supported
Unit selection cap 24 Original 12-unit cap
Definitive Edition graphics Yes No
Forsaken Kingdom campaign Yes, if purchased No
Forsaken Paladin Yes, in multiplayer No
Battle.net matchmaking Yes, with new regions No, LAN and offline only

Community manager Kaivax said when the 1.29 build returned that all Warcraft 3 owners could install Warcraft III – Legacy TFT 1.29 from the version dropdown, and that the Legacy client supports offline and LAN play only. That warning is now the whole point of the split. Ranked melee on Battle.net, and the community ladder on W3Champions, still run through the live remaster. Local play does not.

How Warcraft 3 Got a Separate 1.29 Build

Reforged launched in January 2020 as the only supported Warcraft 3 on Battle.net. Classic melee, custom maps, and the old campaigns were folded into that client. LAN survived in a clunky form, then as a main-screen button once you logged out. The remaster still angered players who wanted the 2003 executable back.

THE ROAD TO THE SPLIT CLIENT

  1. January 2020: Warcraft III: Reforged goes live on Battle.net and becomes the supported way to launch the game.
  2. Late April 2026: Battle.net offers Warcraft III – Legacy TFT 1.29 again, limited to offline play and LAN, with no ladder.
  3. September 12, 2026: Patch 3.0.0 removes LAN and offline mode from the Reforged client and ships Forsaken Kingdom on that same client.

The May-era 1.29 drop was a concession to people who never accepted the remaster as the only copy. Patch 3.0 then made the remaster even less like that copy. Owners who want the 24-unit cap, the new hero, or the new campaign have to live on Battle.net. Owners who want a game that still runs on a switch in a basement stay on 1.29.

Keeping LAN Means Rolling Back to 1.29

Warcraft 3 was built for a room full of CRT monitors and a stack of ethernet cables. That is still how a lot of custom maps get played at parties, in dorms, and at small cups that never touch a ranked queue. After 3.0, that room is on 1.29 graphics and 1.29 rules.

The louder problem is not a ruined Saturday LAN. It is what happens when the login check fails. A 3.0 campaign that needs a live Battle.net session cannot be played if the servers are down, if a region loses routing, or if the product is later pulled. The 1.29 client can still host a melee game on a dead internet connection. That is the copy that will boot in 10 years. The copy Blizzard spent patch 3.0 on will not, unless someone keeps those servers lit.

Blizzard did not walk this back in the two days after the notes went up. The official Warcraft account spent that window selling the campaign, not the network cut.

Nine New Servers and No Local Room

The same networking block that killed LAN added hosted capacity in nine cities. Blizzard is spending money on the online map, then deleting the mode that does not use it.

NEW 3.0 GAME SERVERS

  • Asia-Pacific: Jurong West, Singapore; Osaka, Japan; Delhi, India; Melbourne, Australia.
  • Europe: Saint-Ghislain, Belgium; Hamina, Finland.
  • Americas: Toronto, Ontario, Canada; Osasco, São Paulo, Brazil; The Dalles, Oregon, USA.

Those boxes help ranked play and custom games on Battle.net. They do nothing for two laptops on a kitchen table. Passworded custom lobbies, new regions, and a live login are one design. LAN was the other design. Patch 3.0 picked the first and parked the second on 1.29.

Forsaken Kingdom Needs a Live Login

Forsaken Kingdom is the first new Warcraft 3 campaign in more than 20 years, shadow-dropped during the BlizzCon 2026 opening ceremony and sold the same day. Brad Chan, senior manager of the RTS/RPG group and project lead, said the pack has about 30 hours of play and nearly an hour of in-game cinematics. The story fills the gap between Arthas’s return to Lordaeron and the rise of the Undercity, with a four-mission prologue, The Last Days of Lordaeron, then three campaign chapters built more like The Frozen Throne’s Rexxar adventure than a classic mission string.

The Battle.net shop lists Forsaken Kingdom for $29.99 and states that an internet connection, a Battle.net account, and the Battle.net desktop app are required to play. Voiceover is English only.

BATTLE.NET SHOP PRICES

Edition Price Contents
Warcraft III: Reforged $29.99 Base game, including the free 3.0 update
Forsaken Kingdom $29.99 New campaign; requires Reforged
Forsaken Kingdom Combo $49.99 Reforged plus the campaign
Warcraft Forever Collection $79.99 Both games plus WoW pack and 30 days of Game Time, sold through January 11, 2027

World of Warcraft: Forever continues the Lordaeron thread when it launches on November 4, 2026. The RTS campaign is the on-ramp, and it sits on the client that now refuses to start without a network. You can still play the old campaigns and LAN melee on 1.29. You cannot take Sylvanas’s new chapter, the Forsaken Paladin, or the 24-unit cap into that room.

The remaster is the live product. The 1.29 build is the one that still works when Battle.net does not.

A film, an album or a game in the entertainment and gaming pages is reported as confirmed only when the studio, label or publisher has said so on the record, box office and chart figures come from the tracking body that publishes them, and a sports result or transfer is taken from the league or club rather than a fan account. The same separation of the confirmed from the claimed applies in news, business, technology and science, and in lifestyle, travel and auto, where a product's performance is stated only after Harry has tested it.
